Preparing for the New School Year: A Comprehensive Guide for Nebraska Families

As the summer winds down, families across Nebraska are gearing up for the start of the new school year. With the first day of classes just around the corner, health officials are urging parents to prioritize their children's well-being when preparing for the academic journey ahead.

Ensuring a Smooth Transition: Tips for a Successful Back-to-School Season

Immunizations: Safeguarding Your Child's Health

One of the most crucial steps in preparing for the new school year is ensuring that your child has all the necessary immunizations. Teresa Anderson, the Director of the Central District Health Department, emphasizes the importance of this task. "At certain times, different children need different shots, and so it's always good to check that immunization record," she explains. "The school nurses are really good about checking those records and they'll let you know. But it's even better if we give those shots before they start school, so check in that record and call us if you need an immunization record on your child, and we'll see if we can't find it for you."By staying on top of your child's immunization schedule, you can not only protect their health but also avoid any potential delays or complications when it comes to school enrollment.

Establishing a Healthy Routine: Bedtime and Sleep Habits

Another essential aspect of back-to-school preparation is adjusting your child's sleep schedule. "In the summer, we tend to stay up a little later, sleep a little later, and help get those kids ready to get back into the groove of school," Anderson notes. "It's nice if we can start setting a gradual bedtime, moving it up just a little bit to get them used to that, and also letting them get up a little bit earlier or having them get up a little earlier."Establishing a consistent sleep routine can have a significant impact on your child's ability to focus and perform well in the classroom. By gradually transitioning to an earlier bedtime and wake-up time, you can help your child's body adapt to the demands of the school schedule.

COVID-19 Precautions: Staying Vigilant

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve, it's crucial for parents to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to protect their children and their families. Anderson advises, "It's always good to test for COVID, especially if your child or you are going to be around someone who's high risk, who doesn't have much of an immune system, and who's apt to get much sicker. It's always good to test. Kids usually weather it pretty well. Adults with different health problems, maybe not so much, so it's always good to have a couple of kits in reserve."By keeping a supply of COVID-19 test kits on hand and being proactive about testing, parents can help ensure that any potential illness is quickly identified and addressed, minimizing the impact on their child's education and the broader school community.

Accessing Resources: The Central District Health Department's Support

The Central District Health Department is committed to supporting Nebraska families as they navigate the back-to-school season. Anderson encourages parents to reach out to the department for assistance. "If you need some of those tests, Anderson said they have some at the health department, so before the school year starts might want to pop by CDHD for a couple."By taking advantage of the resources and expertise available through the Central District Health Department, parents can feel confident that they are taking the necessary steps to ensure their child's well-being and a successful start to the new school year.As the countdown to the first day of school begins, it's clear that preparation and proactive measures are key to a smooth and successful transition. By prioritizing immunizations, establishing healthy routines, and staying vigilant about COVID-19 precautions, Nebraska families can set their children up for academic success and overall well-being throughout the school year.
