Recently, I had the privilege of interviewing Mazaik, a remarkable band composed of two Ithaca High School students and one recent graduate. Their September-released album has made a significant impact within the high school community and even beyond Ithaca. Let's delve into their story through this interview.

Band Origins
Maeve Stuelke '25 shared that she met Zak in 2022 and they started playing together. Their first rehearsal with the whole band was on February 18, 2023. Isaiah Tau '24 added that he was approached by either Maeve or Zak near the railroad tracks while walking to the library after school. He was intrigued and joined the band as a drummer. It's been almost two years since then, with a lot of musical growth along the way.Mazaik truly started with a spark of friendship and a shared love for music. This initial connection laid the foundation for their musical adventures.
Recording Process
Isaiah Tau '24 mentioned that there were days when he couldn't make it to the recording sessions due to various commitments. However, they couldn't push back the release date as it would have been unprofessional. One of the songs they recorded, "Large Mouth Bass," was a standout for Zak and Maeve. Maeve Stuelke '25, who is the band's producer, recalled the late-night recording sessions. They started recording in late June but faced a lull in July and early August. Despite the challenges, they pulled together and got the album out. "Low Tide" was one of the hardest songs to produce, but they persevered.The recording process was a rollercoaster of emotions and challenges. Yet, through it all, Mazaik's determination shone through.
Musical Style
Maeve Stuelke '25 emphasized that their album is mainly funk. With two bassists and a drummer, it's a bass-heavy and drum-heavy genre that they excel in. She also mentioned that they list various genres on their socials, including funk, rock, and bluegrass. While people might look at her strangely when she mentions bluegrass, she brought this unique element to the band as a banjo player. Zak Kasian '26 added that they actually started with bluegrass while busking in the Commons.Mazaik's musical style is a blend of different genres, creating a sound that is truly their own.
Future Plans
Zak Kasian '26 revealed that they are going to release a single soon, an acoustic version of one of Maeve's songs called "All I Want to Know." They are also already working on another album with a demo in hand. Additionally, they will be collaborating with the IHS Jazz band for the April show.Mazaik's future is filled with exciting projects and collaborations, promising more great music to come.
Community Engagement
Maeve Stuelke '25 has control of the Spotify and Apple Music accounts and was pleasantly surprised by the album's reception. Spotify shows that they have around 649 total streams, with listeners not only from Ithaca but also in Canada.Mazaik's music is reaching a wider audience, and their community engagement is growing.
